Creative Nonfiction (Evening)
Instructor: Jay Varner
Cost: $180 Members | $200 Non-Members
8 Tuesdays, June 12-July 31, 2012 | 6:30-9:00pm
Through writing, reading, and discussion, we will spend the class exploring narrative nonfiction: storytelling about real people, real places, and real events. The goal of the course is to build an understanding of what creative nonfiction is and then write it. Creative nonfiction allows a writer to employ the diligence of a reporter, the shifting voices and viewpoints of a novelist, the refined wordplay of a poet, and the analytical modes of an essayist.
Jay Varner’s memoir, Nothing Left to Burn, was published by Algonquin Books (2010). He earned an MFA in creative nonfiction from UNC-Wilmington, where he was nonfiction and managing editor of Ecotone: Reimagining Place. His essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Oxford American Magazine and elsewhere.
