Is there a particular book or essay that made you want to write? From the time my parents began telling me stories and reading me books, I knew that nothing was more exciting than being part of a literary world. And once I understood where the books came from, that some adults had the privilege of making a life out of being storytellers, well, there was no going back after that. Later, when I began studying the art of writing, Flannery O'Connor's Mystery and Manners and John Gardner's The Art of Fiction became two texts that I always returned to for inspiration. What's the number one thing that distracts you when you're trying to write? Reading other authors' work... I'm constantly trying to keep up with all the amazing new books being published, and of course I'm always playing catch-up with all the books I never read the first time around. Often I will sit down to work on my own project but will find myself, hours later, reading someone else's book!If you could write from any location, where would it be? I recently had the opportunity to work as a resident artist for a month in Key West, and I realized that the best place to write is a place where you are free from day-to-day responsibilities. It's amazing how disruptive everyday activities can be: work, family, friends, even the little things like checking email and sorting through the bills at the end of the day. I would love to hide out in Amsterdam or Galway or Paris, find a studio with lots of windows and wonderful views, an environment where I'm free from the distractions of personal responsibilities but surrounded by the distractions of life. I believe that it's important not to become too isolated, to stay engaged with the world and all of its chaos, and I am always inspired by new places, by being taken out of my comfort zone and by exploring other cultures. |
